EU Charter Not in Treaty of Nice
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Brian Cowen T.D., has clarified the issue raised this evening by the Bishop of Raphoe about the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.
"The EU Charter is a political document and is purely advisory in character. It has no legal standing. It is not binding on citizens of the Union or on member States and is not connected in any way with the Treaty of Nice. Neither the Treaty nor the Charter can affect the right to life in any way."
The Minister reiterated that a ‘Yes' vote will boost Ireland's export performance and bring peace and stability across the continent to countries emerging from soviet totalitarianism.
