Statement by Mr. Brian Cowen T.D., Minister for Foreign Affairs, on Sectarian Attacks in Northern Ireland
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Brian Cowen T.D., met today, July 25 2001, with Gerry Kelly, MLA from North Belfast, and a number of residents from the area.
The Minister expressed his grave concern at recent violence and noted that the growing rise in such incidents is extremely worrying.
He has asked the Secretariat in Belfast to continue to monitor developments in North Belfast and other areas and requested that the Secretariat remain in very close contact with the British authorities.
Minister Cowen condemned all such violence and called on all concerned to exercise restraint, and to use whatever influence they possibly can to lessen tension during this very difficult period.
