Minister Cowen deplores loss of life in Gaza
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Brian Cowen T.D., deplored the loss of life resulting from Israeli military actions in the Gaza Strip yesterday. Twelve Palestinians were killed in the Israeli incursions and over sixty injured. In a further incident a four year old child was shot dead by Israeli forces. The Minister offered his condolences to the families of those killed and his hopes for a speedy recovery to the injured.
“Actions such as this poison an already volatile atmosphere and add to the growth of violence. They reinforce the cycle of attack and counter-attack and do not contribute to Israel's own security interests. It is essential for the Government of Israel to understand that progress towards peace can only be made through negotiations.”
The Minister also noted that talks on a ceasefire involving all major Palestinian militant groups had resumed in Cairo last week, under the aegis of the Government of Egypt, and expressed his hope for a successful outcome. The Minister has repeatedly condemned acts of terrorism against innocent Israeli civilians.
