Statement by the Minister of State for Development Cooperation and Human Rights on the death of Ms. Hadja Hamid in Sudan
Statement by Mr. Conor Lenihan T.D., Minister of State for Development Cooperation and Human Rights, on the death of Ms. Hadja Hamid in Sudan
“I have just heard of the death of Ms Hadja Hamid, a GOAL staff member, in a helicopter crash in the Darfur region of Sudan.
I want to offer my condolences to her family and to all of her colleagues working in the region.
I know at first-hand the tremendous work that GOAL is doing in Darfur, in very difficult circumstances. Those difficulties are underlined by the circumstances of her death: the evacuation of NGOs from the area because of the deteriorating security situation there.
The death of Hadja Hamid is a sad and stark reminder of the dangers faced by humanitarian workers. Her name is now sadly added to the 270 humanitarian workers who have died over the last five years alone while bringing aid and comfort to those in dire need.
I want to take this opportunity to wish a speedy recovery to those who were injured in the crash.
The Government will continue to support the invaluable work of GOAL, the UN, NGOs and inter-governmental agencies in Darfur.”
